CLIP-vitro kits are based on fluorophores with excellent solubility which is achieved by introducing negatively charged sulfonate groups to the fluorophores. This makes CLIP-vitro products impermeable to living cells. CLIP-vitro products are excellent to selectively label CLIP-tag fusion proteins exposed on the surface of mammalian cells, e.g. to study internalization of membrane receptors.
